The sea is changing and humans aren’t sure what to make of it. It’s shown that migration patterns of sea creatures have changed and even the deep ocean species have come to the surface. Their connection with the sea is shown as something special and even coveted by other people but there’s a deep sadness to them and the other children of the sea. By no means does this make them villainous though. There’s mention of pollution and Umi and Sora seem to be on a strange mission that may not have humanity’s best interests in mind.

It’s a very quiet manga at times, taking moments to focus on the feeling of rain or putting your feet in the ocean and that’s what makes it so moving and unique among other manga I’ve read.Ĭhildren of the Sea‘s focus on sensory details just emphasizes its message of how the sea, the land, and space are connected.

I’m so glad I picked this manga up on a recommendation! Children of the Sea by Daisuke Igarashi is a strange and fascinating tale of two children, Umi and Sora, who were raised by dugongs and Ruka, a young girl who becomes friends with them.
